The AST Weld-in Roll Cage BMW E87 V5 is a full roll cage for the BMW 1 Series E87 with five-door hatchback bodywork. This Weld-in E87 V5 is the heaviest-duty specification in the range and is permanently welded into the car with the complete set of bars.

The cage is designed and built by AST Roll Cages in Spain, for teams building a fully developed competition car who want to leave nothing to later modifications.

Fitting and delivery

The cage is built to order; the standard delivery time is 15 to 35 working days. With the complete set of bars, this is the most labour-intensive version to fit: the interior has to come out and the eight welded mounting points call for an experienced welder. Decide on your seating position and the location of the harness mounting beforehand.

AST digitises the bodyshell with laser scanners and draws up the cage in 3D, so that even with this full set of bars every tube connects in exactly the right place. The more tubes go into the car, the more a millimetre of deviation matters, and that is precisely where a custom-scanned cage beats a universal kit. The cage is intended for track and competition use; the regulations of your own organiser always take precedence.

Frequently asked questions

Does the FIA homologation apply to every E87?

No. For this Weld-in E87 V5, AST lists the number N-5698 / A-5698 and states that the safety structure complies with FIA Appendix J in the following version: BMW 120d. The listing is therefore limited to the 120d. For a 116i, 118i, 130i or any other engine, you should not assume that your car is covered; check this with your national sporting authority beforehand.

What is the difference from the V4?

The V4 has door bars plus an extra diagonal bar and harness bar; the V5 goes a step further with the complete set of bars and is the heaviest-duty specification. Both are welded into the car at eight points.

Does this cage fit an E81 or E82?

No. It is designed for the five-door E87. AST designs a separate cage for the E81 three-door and the E82 Coupé; they cannot be swapped.
