This Valeo conversion kit 835038 replaces the original dual-mass flywheel of your BMW E36 M50 or M52 with a robust single-mass flywheel, complete with the large 240 mm clutch from the 328i. A worn dual-mass flywheel causes rattling at idle, clunks in the drivetrain and ultimately a failed clutch. With this kit, you are rid of those problems for good.

The one-piece flywheel makes the drivetrain more reliable and the throttle response more direct. The 240 mm clutch, also known as the “2.8 clutch”, has a larger friction surface than the smaller standard clutches of the 320i and 323i. This makes the kit suitable for both standard and mildly modified engines, and a popular upgrade for M50 and M52 swaps.

Everything comes from Valeo in OEM quality: flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing and flywheel bolts are all in the box. Please note: special tools are required for fitting.

Fitting and delivery

The gearbox has to come out. Fit the new flywheel with the supplied bolts at the specified torque, centre the clutch disc and fit the pressure plate and release bearing. Special tools are required for fitting. Allow half a day to a full day of work on the lift. The kit is supplied to order; delivery time is 4 to 7 days.

Yes, the kit is made for all M50 and M52 engines in the E36, including the models that originally have a smaller clutch.

Does a single-mass flywheel make more noise?

You may hear some light gearbox rattle at idle. This is normal with a single-mass flywheel and not a defect.

What special tools do I need?

Among other things, a clutch alignment tool for the clutch disc and the correct tools for the flywheel bolts. If in doubt, have the kit fitted by a garage.
