The BC Racing DS coilover kit E46 (part number I-02-DS-DA) is a coilover kit adjustable in height and damping, also simply called a coilover, for the BMW 3 Series E46 Sedan, Coupe, Touring and Compact with rear-wheel drive, model years 1998 to 2006. The spring rate is 6 kg/mm front and 8 kg/mm rear.

With this kit, you turn your E46 into a car that feels at home on track. The DS series has the same basis as the BR, but gets a digressive piston: during slow movements between 0 and 50 mm/s the damping is firmer, while on sharp impacts the damper gives way more quickly.

For an E46 this means less body roll on turn-in, less dive under braking and a calmer rear end when you accelerate out of the corner. Meanwhile, kerbs, seams and bumps do not upset the car’s balance, because the damper gives way during those fast movements.

The spring rate is 6/8 kg/mm, you adjust the damping in 30 clicks and this version comes with central top mounts. You set the ride height via the damper body, independently of the spring preload.

Fitting and delivery

The kit is vehicle-specific and replaces the original dampers and springs. Then set the ride height correctly and have the wheel alignment reset, because camber and toe change as well. What is the difference between the BC Racing DS and BR for the E46?

The DS has a digressive piston and a satin chrome damper body and is more track-focused; the BR has a linear piston. The BR is the all-rounder for the road and the occasional track day, and the DS shares that basis.

What will I notice from the digressive damping of the BC Racing DS in my E46?

With the DS coilover kit E46 you mainly feel less body roll and dive, because the damping is firmer during slow movements. Over fast bumps, the damper instead gives way more quickly, so that the tyres keep contact with the tarmac.

Can the BC Racing DS coilover kit for the E46 also be used for everyday driving?

Yes. Set the damping a few clicks softer and the E46 remains perfectly usable on the road. The emphasis is, however, on track use.

Does this BC Racing DS coilover kit fit an E46 Touring or Convertible?

Yes for the Touring, and also for the Compact. No for the Convertible: for that, BC Racing has its own kit under part number I-90. This I-02 kit is released for all rear-wheel drive E46 versions except the M3 and the Convertible.
